Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

To provide familiarity with and critical appraisal ogf theories and concepts of Community Development (CD);the practice of CD in Ireland;and to evaluate the impact of community based strategies in Ireland.

Syllabus:

Images and ideas of community;origins and development of CD as a field of action and study;the classical model of CD;evolving theories and concepts of CD-spatial,categorical,structural-functional and continuum approaches to the study of CD. State and community in modern Irish society;origins and evolution of CD in Ireland;consensus and conflict models of CD in the Irish context. CD and local area based development. EU,national and local strategy in respect of local and community development; CD and the "partnership process". The strengths and weaknesses of CD as a strategy of development.

Distinguish between various images and ideas of community Demonstrate awareness ofthe origins and development of CD as a field of action and study Distinguish and critique various theories and concepts of CD Review and evaluate the evolution of CD practice in Ireland, historically and currently

Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of CD as a strategy for development, both generally and in the Irish context

Demonstrate competenciesin library based research skills; essay derived writing skills; and tutorial based verbal articulation skills.

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

The module is taught through a combination of lectures and tutorials. The lectures outlinne the basic framework of the course. The tutorials provide the students with opportunities for discussion based on selected readings from newspapers, journals,videos and official reports. Assessment is by way of two term papers.
